Location management is one of the important part of resource management for mobile communication systems. It achieves user tracking and ascertain the position of user through two main operations, paging and location updating. As we know, paging need to consider the call arrival rate and location updating, and concerns the mobility rate of the mobile terminal. Thus many resources such as signaling interchange between mobile terminals and base stations, air interface spectrum, wireless network bandwidth, network database resource and etc. will be consumed during these two operations.Future wireless personal communication network (PCN) will support inter-network roaming between different access networks and core network for higher density and higher mobility users that will lead to large quantities of system resources consuming. So it is very important to optimize the current location management schemes to achieve efficiency.Main topics for location management research currently are trying to optimize the system database structure and minimize the signaling interchange. Both of them interest in how to reduce database updating, paging steps of mobile terminal and paging delay in the case of mobile user burst increase. The thesis illustrates on the location management schemes and their performance analysis. First we give some information about location management and its analytical models, then a comparison is made among three location updating schemes newly proposed, meanwhile we propose a MLR-bound scheme for 3G characteristic users in order to realize inter-network roaming. In chapter 2, we compare the inter-network cost in three conditions. And then, numerical analysis about overall cost of location management is given through the formula we deriving. In chapter 4, we simulate the environment users moving in the location area.At last, the thesis is concluded and future work is proposed.
