Windows CE is an open, scalable, 32-bit embedded operating system that is designed to meet the needs of a broad range of embedded devices, from enterprise tools to consumer products. It has a complete OS feature set and comprehensive development tools. With user interface similar to Windows series for PC, Windows CE is easy to most end-users.Based on the research and study of the kernel of Windows CE, this thesis analyes the device managing strategy and the architecture of its device drivers. After that, This paper analyses and discusses the results of a project in Thin-Client port innovation. A new structure of Thin-Client interfaces, named USB-Expander is designed and implemented on a hardware evaluation board, with its device drivers for Windows CE.The most difficult aspect of this paper is the design and successful implementation of the drivers. The USB virtual serial driver and the USB IEEE-1284 driver, which both can be integrated well with USB-Expander hardware and Windows CE, were ported together successfully. Test results proved that USB-Expander can improve the flexibility of Thin-Client, while reducing cost. The design and analyse of the Thin-Client port innovation project is expect to contribute significantly to the development of Thin-Client architecture.
