In order to improve the modeling efficiency of FEM, solve the phenomenon of 'island' that no dataflow communication between the existing CAE software and CAD software, the technology of data communication is applied to the research of CAD-to-CAE communication for geometry data which based on simulation. Through the format of DXF, this paper realizes the communication of the geometry data from UG to SHEET-FORMING. SHEET-FORMING is running on the SGI/UNIX graphic workstation, which is a special punch-forming non-linear FEM analysis software package developed by ourselves. UG is a commercial CAD software, which is famous in the world. The whole process is, dividing the complicated part into normal sub-region ones, calculating their geometry coordinates, then creating the model in UG and exporting the DXF file. With the use of data interface developed in this thesis, all geometry data is extracted from DXF and written into the visualization-modeling tool in SHEET-FORMING. After integrating the geometry data with the physical conditions, the finite element model is finished and the successive simulation can be carried out. There are two characteristics in this research, one is the preparation of CAD model is based on the theory of finite element model sub-region, the other is the unite of hashing algorithm and state chart description method made the interface to deal with all information of DXF. With the realization of above two characteristics, the user can build geometry model in UG, which greatly reduces the pre-processor's time spending of SHEET-FORMING. In addition, the algorithm of equal-distance curves and surfaces adopted in the visualization-modeling tool is also revised.
