How 'nonlinear' a nonlinear system can be and whether it is worth to try a nonlinear controller are fundamental issues in nonlinear control. Gap metric is used to tackle these issues for a nonlinear benchmark boiler system. For a strongly nonlinear system, this paper proposes a gain-scheduling control configuration based on loop-shaping method, which simplifies the gain-scheduling control configuration and design. This gain-scheduling controller is simple and easy to tune on-line. It builds a basis for the engineering application of the gain-scheduling method. Finally, the approach is applied to a chemical process to show its effectiveness.
