Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is developed fast; it is one important part of personal communication system and an extent of wire network. New technologies are involved in wireless communication to develop the system's capability for the user's exponential growth in the demand for wireless service. Smart antenna is a new technology, it is one of the key technology of the 3G communication system because of the capability in improve the quality of wireless channel and the system's capability. So it is a hot point to use the smart antenna in WLAN.The medium access control (MAC) protocol is used to control multi user share a wireless channel, it is a key of wireless communication system's capability. A well designed protocol should provide high throughput, short delay and less cost. The existing MAC protocol is based on the omni antenna, IEEE 802.11 is one of the most used protocols; it is fine in omni antenna mode. But if we use smart antenna in IEEE 802.11 network, there are some problems. Some directional MAC protocols were provided to solve those problems, and implement the spatial reuse of the wireless channel. The MAC protocol of IEEE 802.11 is recommened in the paper, smart antenna and the use in wireless communication are introduced. Some MAC protocols based on smart antenna are analyzed, a new MAC protocol is proposed based on those protocols. It implements the spatial reuse of wireless channel in DCF and needn't change the frames in IEEE 802.11. The model is built in OPNET, and the analysis show that the system with smart antenna using the new protocol has higher throughput than the system with omni antenna using IEEE 802.11.
