The urban planning visualization is an up-to-date field of the urban construction. It is not only a new way for the planning designers to display their creations, but also a virtual platform on which many new or old urban design can be easily analyzed ,estimated and contrasted together by the planning designers and the public. With the rapid development of the visualization technique, it is obvious that this technique will be widely used in urban planning, urban construction and urban management in the future. For this reason, in this paper, the focus is given to critical technology of the 3D visualization on urban design.Firstly, the importance of the 3D visualization on urban design is pointed out. And then, how to take visualization and GIS into urban planning is discussed. Based on the practice of digital FoShan project, an overall technology scheme, especially on 3D model creating, scene optimizing and system integrating, is presented. With the assistance of the most popular software such as Multigen and Vega, the crucial technological routine is discussed. Some critical technologies, such as Large Area Database Management, feature model creating, integration of urban design and data processing of texture, are further discussed in this paper.At last, the urban design 3D visualization system is introduced in detail. Concentration is mainly paid to it's technological routine, key technology, Vega API programming, the creating and integration of the roaming system.The 3D visualization system on urban design is still a basal application of visualization and GIS technology. The more developing of those technologies, the more possibilities of a new direction for urban planning will be found.
