Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) is a necessary composing part for IPv4 and IPv6. It is a primary measure which could transfer cortrolled informationes in TCP/IP networkes. With the definition of the next generation network protocol of the Internet Protocol Version 6, Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) changed. IPv6 uses ICMP as defined in IPv4, with deleting some functions used for IPv4 but not for IPy6 and adding some new functions such as Neighbor Discovery. This thesis introduced position of ICMP for TCP/IP and basic fuctions of ICMP firstly. Then, it contrasted differences between ICMPv6 and ICMPv4 and described messages formats and classifications of ICMPv6, focused on discussing the fuction, messages formats as well as fields meanings belong to ICMPv6.Aimed at ICMPv6, four experiments have been taken. These are node attaching to a new link test, the interaction between nodes test, network path checking test & interaction between CN and MN in mobile IPv6 test. The thesis discussed different complexion of ICMPv6 messages which had been sent out or received between routers and nodes, routers and routers, nodes and nodes. Comparing with RFC documents offered by IETF workgroupe, it is analysed and tested for consistency of ICMPv6. Then router advertisement message and neighbor advertisement message were inconsistent slightly with RFC documents were discovered. At last, it put forward some suggestions and considerations for further research.
