With the development of telecommunication technology, the service of communicationwill turn to broadband service charactered as high speed IP data and multimedia data whichrequire the optical network based on the technology of DWDM provide larger capacity totransfer information. But the available gain band of EDFA is now being used up. FiberRaman amplifier (FRA) with all-wave and distributed amplification and low noise figure hasbeen the new hot spot in recent research. Distributed FRA offers several advantages, such asenhancing the bitrates of transmission system, boosting the capacity of optical networks, expanding the relay distance, etc. Therefore, when high-power pump sources becomecommercially available, the FRA gains more and more concern. This dissertation analyzes the principle of FRA and designs the multi-wavelengthRaman pump module. On the basis of the pump module,we operate a series of experimentaltest. The details show as following: (1) FRA's basic theory is detailed. The properties of FRA are discussed, including gainsaturation property, polarization correlation, noise property and high power pump sourceproperty. (2) Discussing the main factors in multi-wavelength pumped FRA's design, analyzing theprinciple of pump configuration. (3) The main optical devices used in FRA are introduced. The design of pump's currentdriving and temperature controlling circuit is stressed. (4) Throgh many experiment,we tested the FRA's properties, including signal On-Offgain,gain variation, polarization correlation and equal noise figure. (5) Transient phenomena in discrete FRA is analyzed, and methods to suppress transientsare also given.
