Secret sharing is an important method to realize the information safety and dataencryption. It is also a fundamental protocol and tool in the multi-party setting. Theconcept of secret sharing was invented independently by Shamir and Blakley in 1979,which basic idea is to divide the secret into pieces and distribute the pieces to differentpersons so that certain subsets of them can get together to recover the secret if thesecret is lost.To date, more than twenty years has passed since the first secret sharing protocolis invented, and in the duration the methods to realize secret sharing schemes havebeen constantly improved so that numerous new secret sharing schemes wereproposed and many branches has come into being ,such as threshold secret sharingscheme, general access structure secret sharing scheme, verifiable secret sharingscheme, perfect secret sharing scheme, proactive secret sharing scheme and so on.In this paper we studied the progress of secret sharing and divided it into somebranches so as to study their characteristics, best results and classical schemes. At thesame time we specified its research emphasis. Then studied its potential applicationsby summarizing the relationship of these branches, and based on it, we invented theconcept "secret sharing scheme with the function of assignment"and provided twokinds of realization methods in order to clarify this concept. Finally, we studied theapplications of secret sharing, especially its application in digital signature sharing.
