Due to the fact that current Web GIS is ineffective in such aspects as data reusability, client side generalization, platform-independence, development facilitation, a new technique is required to improve it.Component technique has become one of the technical currents about software today. Component GIS (Com GIS) is also an advanced technique in current GIS applied field. The software based on components is programmable, extensible and reusable, which leads the applied GIS development to a bran-new stage. There are some advantages as short development period, friendly user interface and simple secondary development when applying component technique to Web GIS. Consequently our study aims at an open, efficient, easy operated and extensible module of Com Web GIS by using advanced distributed object technique. On the basis of this module, a navigating information system on campus should be realized.Subsequently, various techniques about current Web GIS and some distributed object techniques are compared in detail. For distributed architecture based on component grew quickly, it has become the main technique of constructing object Web on Internet in recent years. Because HTTP/CGI architecture is not good enough, distributed object technique has taken over the traditional method of CGI to construct GIS application step by step, and become a new direction on Web GIS development. Although every one of these distributed object techniques each has its strong point, J2EE keeps ahead on open, multi-platform portability, safety, maturity, product and distributed component technique. J2EE technique is introduced into our study to realize Web GIS in order to fight these questions that should be settled. A component three-tier application module based on J2EE technique is been set forth. Then the architecture and process of this module is expounded in detail. Finally How to realize an application based on this module is narrated by illuminating a concrete applied field—navigating information system on campus. This study is a tentative for similar Web GIS application. As a result, this project satisfied the system in credibility, stability, flexibility, reusability, portability and extensibility.
