In this paper, present status, developing trend and important achievements of motor manufacturing are introduced. The concept, background, developing status, design characteristics, operating characteristics and prospect of powerformer are also introduced. Meanwhile the difference between powerformer and conventional generator as well as the key technique of powerformer are also included.Powerformer is a kind of high-voltage generator which can be connected to the power grid directly. Circular conducts, which are based on the technique for high-voltage cable with solid-state dielectric, are adopted in stator winding taking place of traditional rectangle conducts. The circular conductors can produce a uniform electric field. Because of the introduction of high-voltage circular cable in stator winding, it is possible that the output voltage of generator can increase and exceed 36kV. In this way powerformer can be directly connected to power grid. Powerformer combines the function of conventional generators and that of transformers together. Thus the investment and fault points are reduced while safety and reliably are increased. Though the technique of electric machines has been improved greatly for the last hundred years, direct generating or utilizing extra-high voltage electricity cannot be solved by traditional theory and technique yet. That is the electricity generated by generators can directly connected to power grid without step-up transformers and electric machines can directly obtain electric energy from extra-high voltage power grid without step-down transformers. This problem can be solved by powerformer. By using powerformer, the traditional mode of power plant in the last one century is broken and the efficiency as well as benefit is increased. Powerformer is also helpful to environmental protection. That makes a big leap in the development of electric machines. The research in this paper has a certain practical engineering value. It provides solid basis of designing, manufacturing, inspecting powerformer prototype machines and commercial machines. Meanwhile the theoretical verification and practical experience are also obtained from our research.
