Hybrid dynamic systems (HDS) involve discrete event dynamic systems (DEDS) and continuous variable dynamic systems (CVDS), in which DEDS and CVDS interact with each other. The state of HDS consists of continuous state as well as discrete state. Transformation of HDS is driven by time and events and can be modeled using movement equations based on continuous variables and discrete variables. It is introduced at first about HDS' description and modeling and about an improved model of HDS. The character of HDS, such as stability, controllability, observability and unflappability, are analyzed and the corresponding criterion is defined. All conclusions can be generalized to other types of HDS.Control synthesis of HDS is mostly investigated. The controllers and estimators design approach within the framework of extension principle starts with expanding certain spaces of a dynamic system with overlapping subsystems into larger spaces such that the subsystems appear as disjoint. Then, decentralized control laws are designed in the expanded spaces and finally contracted to the smaller spaces for implementation on the original system. Extension principle based controllers' design for HDS is brought forward and estimator of HDS is designed within the framework of the extension principle. At last, a HDS model, composed of a class of automaton and a series of continuous control systems, is improved and an example of a transformation system consisting of a line of conveyor belts is used as a running example. HDS controllers consisting of automaton and a series of continuous controllers are designed under reconstructing the model and redefining some of external discrete events and combining with electronic & computer technology, and can obtain a good performance for this type of HDS.
