With the rapid increase of Internet and the gradually depleting of IPv4 address IPv6-the next internet protocol version, will replace IPv4 necessarily .The new characters of IPv6 will provide more perfect support and wider foreground for the application and development of the next generation network.The transition from IPv4 to IPv6 will not accomplish in an action, and in a long period, they'll coexist. V6 is not a simple upgrade from V4, and because of the difference of head structure and address configuration, they are not compatible. How to gradually and smoothly transit to IPv6 is a problem that must be resolved.This paper detailed introduces some concrete methods in allusion to different instance in transition period, including dual protocol stacks, tunneling technology and protocol translation. The two former methods have a relative simple implementation and strong intent to realize the communications between IPv6 nodes in the IPv4 network, but provide no support for IPv4 nodes to contact with IPv6. Protocol translation technology just put the stress on this, after the deeply analysis of current different technics this paper designs and implements a transition technic based on translation gateway. The translation gateways are placed on the border routers, and translate protocols between the different realms, including IP, ICMP, TCP and application layer. During the implementation we take linux operation system as our experiment platform, make use of Netfilter frame and codekernel module to call hook function to analyze and translate data packets passing through IP protocol stack. Experiment proves that this scheme completely accords with the first designing principle and can achieve anticipate purpose.Finally, this paper point out the shortage of the design and the next improving tasks.
