With the development of fiber-optic communication system and bandwidth services, OTDM system has been the focus of research in the world. At the same time, the transmission speed and distance of the optical signals is limited by the optical switching. This problem can well be solved by using all-optical 3R regeneration. The optical switch is the key of these two technologies. In this paper, we spread our work on UNI in following aspects:As the key component of UNI, SOA is studies in detail theoretically. A mathematical model is given by Optisystem 2.1 to investigate the way of the optical pulse passed in SOA and the gain response characteristics of SOA.The XGM and XPM in SOA is studied by proceeding simulation and experiment in different conditions. This work gives the simulative and experimental condition for achieving UNI optical switch.The basic principle of UNI is given and studied by using Jones matrix method in detail. The switching window of UNI is simulated and we got its mathematical expression. Its switch window characteristic, the gain response and the XPM characteristics of SOA are analyzed for the conditions of experiment, such as the DGD of PMD, different parameters of SOA, the control pulse and the data pulse. It is useful for debugging the switch windows in experiments. The performances of UNI at 10Gbit/s and 20Gbit/s are analysed through the experiments. Compared with the theory above, we change the conditions of experiment to observe the result of experiment. It is found in the experiment that we can optimize the switch window by adjusting the birefringent polarization c ontroler (PC). We got the trend of the extinction ratio of UNI optical switch by analyzing the experimental result and discuss the reason of it.
