Based on the work of the formers, this paper gave emphasis to the research of some problemsabout the theory and the design of the active integrated antenna (AIA) elements and array. Firstly, the oscillator theory was researched as the base of the design of oscillator-type AIA inthis paper. The derivation of oscillation condition and stability condition were given; at the sametime, the cavity modeling theory of microstrip antenna was studied, which gave the relationbetween the size of microstrip antenna and the resonate frequency and that between the size andimpedance of microstrip antenna. Based on these theories, two kinds of AIA element weredesigned elementarily and the measurement was had. To overcome the absence of availablecommercial software which could be applied to the design of AIA, the full-waveapproach—FDTD is applied to the simulation and design of AIA, the numeric result was in goodagree with that of experiment. Secondly, this paper illustrated the nonlinear phase dynamic theory of the AIA array and theapplication of it to power-combining and beam-scaning technique. According to these theories, thecoupling parameter of nearest neighbors was found by experiment, then the two-element andthree-element AIA array were designed, and the result of measurement was in agree with that ofthe nonlinear phase dynamic theory, and the beam-scaning of two-element array was realized bytuning the free oscillation frequency of the elements. All the work laid a foundation for the designof lager scale AIA array in the future.
