This paper gave emphasis to the research of some problems about the theory and the design of the active integrated antenna element and array.First, this paper researched the oscillator theory, which gave the oscillation condition of active antenna, and the cavity modeling theory of the microstrip antenna, which gave the relationship between the size and impendence of microstrip patch antenna and that between the size and resonant frequency. Based on these theories, this paper discusses the method of design of the rectangular Gunn integrated active microstrip patch antenna in detail. The size of the active antenna and the location of the device in the antenna is obtained at the specified operation frequency. The design method is supported by the experiment.Secondly, a kind of full-wave approach-FDTD is applied to simulate the oscillation of a Gunn integrated active microstrip patch antenna. The lumped circuit model of Gunn diode was incorporated into the FDTD arithmetic. After getting the result in time domain, the frequency of oscillation is obtained by FFT. The numerical experiment is done with FDTD method. In addition, this paper numerically investigated the influence of the lumped parameters of the Gunn diode on the frequency of the oscillation, and the tuning techniques of the oscillation frequency of the active antenna. Finally, this paper illustrated the nonlinear phase dynamic theory of the active integrated antenna array and the application of it to the power-combining techniques. Some useful results can be obtained. For example, the specified phase relationship can be acquired by tuning the free-running frequency of peripheral portions of array.
