With the magic development of information technology including semiconductor technology, computing technology and communication technology, we have passed the era of Personal Computer and Networking and are coming into the dawn of post-PC era. As the computing model of the 21st century, Ubiquitous Computing means that to provide people with any interested information whenever and wherever, considerable micro computing devices will be embedded into various environments to collect relative information then process it and communicate with each other. As a tangible technology of Ubiquitous Computing Model, Wireless Sensor Network has been applied in the fields of combat scouting and natural environment monitoring etc successfully. In order to bring people more convenience in their everyday life, many commercial companies and research institutes are focusing on the application of this technology into the indoor environment Nowadays. With this research and application background, this thesis first introduces the origin, development and features of the conventional Wireless Sensor Network. Based on the analysis of the requirement and challenges from the indoor environment to this technology, the thesis proposals a brand-new idea of Indoor Wireless Sensor Network (IWSN) and an innovative architecture design of the node in IWSN, which splits the whole node into two parts: the sensor & actuator platform and wireless communication platform (SensorRF). The thesis emphasizes on the design and implementation of the HW & SW of SensorRF especially on the design of IWSN communication stacks, and will illustrate how SensorRF solves the core problems of the easy interconnection of various devices with different brands from engineering view. Finally the thesis summaries the preceding work and proposals a long-term vista over the technical direction, commercialization and usage of SensorRF based IWSN.
