Integrated Optics is a new branch of Opto-electronics, is a synthesis displine connected with Optics Electronics and Solid Physics, is also a subject based on electromagnetism which transfers at optical membrane, and is related to microwave, laser, semiconductor physics and integrated circuit.Plane optical waveguide is one of important models in Integrated Optics. Comparing with others, its'model is easy, physical conception is clear, and could be analyzed conveniently. If there are practical techniques measuring the performance parameters of plane optical waveguides, it could benefit the research on the more complicated bar optical waveguides, thus make a good base for researching integrated optical devices. This dissertation is focused on the theory study of plane optical waveguides and the measurement of its' performance parameters, as can be seen from the following writing. LiNbO3 is the main material of making optical waveguides, and there are two ways to do it: Ti-diffusion and proton-exchange, the later of which is the wide-used means of studying optical waveguides and has many merits. This paper analyzes the basic principle of proton-exchange as well as the characterization of proton-exchanged waveguides.There are also some insurmountable disadvantages about proton-exchange, so annealed photon-exchange comes into being. The discourse analyzes annealing function to proton-exchange, and the refractive index profile about annealed proton-exchanged waveguides.Fabrication process is greatly substantial for device research and fabrication. This paper study the fabrication technology of the optical waveguides in details, such as sputtering, proton-exchange, annealing and so on.We measure the parameters of plane optical waveguides by the Prism-Membrane Coupling. The main parameters about plane optical waveguides include refractive index and membrane thickness. This dissertation studies its principle particularly, write corresponding computer programs. According to the synchronized angles, we also calculate the refractive index and membrane thickness of the testing samples.
