Research on brain function is among the most interesting problems in all subjects and one of the most challenges in natural science. Due to having no hurt to human, research on the electrical activity in brain is the focus. The core of EEG research is the inverse problem obtaining the underlying neural activity from the electric field measured outside a human head.Based on MRI, software included real head model construction, BEM numerical solution and EEG inverse problem solution was developed. The solution space and the algorithm to solve EEG inverse problem were mainly investigated. The following achievements have been obtained:1) Based on the segmented brain data from MRI, the images contour points were obtained and then the brain was divided into many small cubes. These cubic grids formed the inverse problem solution space.2) After the inverse problem solution space had been formed, the Shrinking LORETA-FOCUSS algorithm was used to solve EEG inverse problem and was compared with several other methods, including LORETA and FOCUSS.3) A simulation software of numerical calculation of EEG was developed based on MATLAB, after the methods used to solve EEG forward problem and inverse problem had been analysed. The software included three modules: 3D reconstruction of real head model, EEG forward problem using BEM, EEG inverse problem using Shrinking LORETA-FOCUSS algorithm. In the future, spatio-temporal source model will be investigated and the simulation software will be optimized and developed.
