Model predictive control (MFC) was conceived in the 1970s primarily by industrial process. Its popularity steadily increased throughout the 1980s. It is a control algorithm whose dependence on mathematical model is not strong. At Present, researchers have proposed many algorithms on MFC and studied their features. Moreover, it is successfully applied in the industrial engineering and quite a few commercial models predictive control software emerged. This paper is mainly about the application study of MFC in the temperature control system of an activating furnace and its main contents are as follows:1. The development background, classification, basic idea and status quo of MFC are given at first.2. As one MFC algorithm, dynamic matrix control is discussed in detail. And the principals of multi-step predictive dynamic matrix control and MIMO dynamic matrix control are talked in this part.3. Something about the control system is talked in this part; such as the technical process, control targets requirements etc. Based on this, the control system features are analyzed and the control system model is built. And two control solutions are designed, that is FID control and MFC.4. The designing ideas are realized with Matlab and a friendly HMI is built with Visual Basic. Users can conveniently carry out control system designing and simulation by it.5. Based on the above results of two controls, they are compared. And then the conclusion of this paper is drawn, namely, MFC control is better than traditional FID control. At last, the paper is summered, and the future development directions are mentioned.
