Several basic problems such as the necessity, contemporary status and data structure of video coding are described in this thesis firstly. Various methods of compressing and processing of video signal are specifically discussed, including DCT transform, motion estimation and compensation, quantization, run-length coding and VLC. Then some innovations of H. 263 protocol are described and the emphasis is focused on comparing the performance and results of several searching algorithms. Finally, one of those searching algorithms, cross-searching algorithm, has been simulated on the TMS320VC5402 DSK board. Considering diverse aspects, the computer simulation results show that the compression ratio of our coder can reach 255: 1 under 41.76kbit/s, which especially point to the video sequence used in video phone(176×144). Overall, this thesis has certain value to the application of H. 263 video coding and DSP realization.
