Reverse Engineering (RE) is a combination of analytical methods and applied technologies to absorb advanced technologies. By means of RE, manufacturing industry of our country will be based on a higher benchmark. So it is significative to study RE and develop reverse engineering system independently.This thesis does research on the RE system based on the measuring method with machine vision and a RE system for free-form surface is put into practice. The focus topics of this thesis are as follows:1. The domestic and overseas instances of the key techniques of RE are summarized. The frame of the RE system based on machine vision is schemed out.2. A system for digitizing the surface by method of structed lighting is developed. The hardware system is designed as a portable set, so the measurement in different places will be achieved. The key techniques of digital image processing are discussed. The concept of visualization is imported into RE system for a fast inspection of the digitizing data.3. The integration of CAT system and CAD/CAM system is realized. The data interfaces are worked over. And the objective for modeling the free-form surface is accomplished.4. Data transfer from CAT system to CAD/CAM is fulfilled by three methods, such as RS-232C, Windows Sockets and FTP.5. With the use of the RE system, the working face of the lapel-shaper is reconstructed well. It proves that the RE system developed by this thesis is a good tool for modeling the free-form surface.The contents of this thesis include:Chapter I : The practical meaning and the key techniques of RE are surveyed. The prospective objectives, the research plan and the key points of the thesis are introduced. Chapter II: The RE system is designed as a whole. Chapter III: The CAT system is designed. ChapterIV: The CAT system is calibrated. Chapter V: CAT system and CAD/CAM system are integrated. ChapterVI: The data transfer system is designed. ChapterVH: The software system is designed. ChapterWI: An example is presented to verify the RE system. ChapterIX: The key topics of the paper and some topics awaiting to be further studied are proposed.
