Steel-making plant of Panzhihua steel group have tow hot metal mixers and three converters. These equipments are very important for production. At present, while pouring the melted iron to ladle, the operator can't make certain about the level position of melted iron due to the soot and dark environment. It always results in overflow of melted iron. When converters run, the space between cover and lance make nitrogen pressure changing. It causes the fire out and leads devices on platform to be destroyed. The steel structure and girder are distorted by heating. This kind of manual work is lack of objectivity. In the way of modernization, It is necessary to accelerate the automatization by using computer information technology.In view of the problem above mentioned, the author adopts computer information technology such as video monitoring and image processing to monitor the metal mixer and the converter. Video signals from the camera are sent to digital monitoring system and displayed on the screen. At the same time, they are compressed and stored to prepare for network and replay. Besides, single video frame are smoothed and noise filtered. After the digital filter and subtraction analysis, the result was used to control nitrogen .The control part applies the image processing technology. The paper discusses the image collecting, compressing and coding technology. Gray scale histogram and gray scale transformation are used to analyse images. One real-time image is compared with a basic template. The result that we get from subtraction analysis are transformed into standard signal.Above all, the paper puts forward a way of developing digital video monitoring system and provides a method to control nitrogen switch.
