Intelligent Distance Exercise System (IDES for short) is an internet-based exercise system in character with intelligence, open-structure, discipline-cross and multi-layer. Using this system, we can finish exercise course on computer including subject design, assignment, answering questions, auto distinguishing, evaluating and summing-up. Because of using Artificial Intelligence (AI for short) and Expert System (ES for short) technology, it can not only auto distinguish subjective themes such as calculative or probative ones but also penetrate and dynamically construct learning case history of student.At present, the education software in the form of exercise in home market only can distinguish objective subjects such as selective or blank-filled ones but cannot deal with subjective themes such as calculative or probative ones. And the foreign research level of relative fields is almost alike the civil. The creation and advancement of this project is obvious considering that student does homework on paper and teacher corrects it with manpower.The development of IDES is of great value. Firstly, it can remarkably improve teaching quality, efficiency and benefit in exercise. Furthermore, transmitting homework by post office or e-mail weakens the supervision of homework and IDES can advance the reputation and quality of distant education. Thirdly, IDES can exert network resources of school or university and it will play an import role on the reformation of traditional teaching methods that uses modern information technology.From the point of view of AI technology, this paper describes knowledge representation, knowledge acquirement and knowledge reasoning of IDES as well as the refinement of knowledge base i. e. structural transformation that is author's primary task.Firstly, defines special structure as inner storage of discipline theoretic knowledge and analyze knowledge basing on recursive AND/OR tree. Then, designs graphics/text mixed editor and formula editor to acquire knowledge. Furthermore, intelligently transform crude formula strings on principle established by usage as well as using a great deal of common sense knowledge. At the end, basing on comparative model, using depth-first search strategy and special arithmetic in the principle of mathematical equipollence, IDES can auto distinguish the subject after comparing key steps and answering steps of student.
