With the development of wood industry,the manufacture of wood products is becoming significantly increasing. The demand of a consistently high-quality surface finish in products introduces inspection requirements that cannot be easily met by manual inspection. This paper discusses the development of a machine vision system for the various defect types on wood surface. The range of surface defects occurred during the manufacture of this product includes those with both color and texture variations. The machine vision system is to detect undesirable defects that may appear on the surface of rough wood lumber. A neural network is used within the blackboard framework for a labeling verification step of the high-level recognition module of vision system. The system has been successfully tested on a number of boards from several different species.The thesis is an important part of the project Application of Machine Vision in Wood Surface Defect Defection that aided by the Fund of National Nature Science. In the system,the machine vision system is used to automatically recognized the wood defects by the neural network,and has been researched the model patterns of wood defects.PC,real-time frame grabber and industry monitor form a machine vision system. With the system,the collecting,the connecting,the analyzing and processing of the images of the woods defects has been done. On the experimental equipments of the laboratory,we dedicate to mock the manual vision to establish a theory and method of machine system with which the defects on the woods surface should be detected. The DH-PCI-H black and white grabber finishes the process of transmitting the data,which controlled by the grabber. Without CPU,its speeds of which be transmitted be at 40MB/S,and be able to connected with the more parts of the standard or un-standard signals of videos,so it is finished at the data is transmitted in real-time. In the paper,the program software use Borland C++ 5.0 as the development tool. The system software is completed with it. The software program has a unity forming of windows. Friendlier,more duties,its interfaces and it has a powerful quality in all-purpose using.
