The wider usage of various sorts of optical fiber brings all-fiber acoustic-optical modulator, as an instance of all-fiber system, more and more value in development and research. On the base of the theory of acoustic-optical interaction, which is improved day by day, many new type acoustic-optical modulators has been designed and developed, and some has been in use. It is one purpose of this article to present the fundamental theory of acoustic optical modulator, which mainly includes theories on light-wave propagation in optical fiber, acoustic-wave propagation and acoustic-optical interaction in fiber core. On the other hand, the article introduces the techniques of process and analyzes the data of examination of two new type all-fiber acoustic-optical modulator, which are surface acoustic wave (SAW) all-fiber modulator and all-fiber modulator with acoustic-reflection mirror respectively. It can be expected that, with the improvement of the theory and technics, all-fiber acoustic-optical modulator will be applied in many fields.
