Francis L. H. Pott made St. John's University, an unknown academy, into the most famous Mission university in China and educated a lot of elites in China's society in the Republican Period. Considering his educational philosophy and exploring his educational practice will have important references for the development of contemporary higher education in China. At the beginning of this present article, Francis Pott's life stories and the developmental history of St. John's University are briefly introduced. In the second, Francis Pott's schooling-running concept is analyzed through different aspects, namely, his religious view, objective view, quality view, family-like management view, and financial movement view, and so on. Thirdly, Francis Pott's educational practice at St. John's University is discussed and objectively evaluated from four angels:administration mode, education mode, school culture, and English teaching. Finally, the successful experience of Francis Pott's school running and its inspiration for China's contemporary higher education are concluded from the "St. John's Spirit" and the "St. John's Mode"... |
