It is an indisputable fact that high school teachers have long working hours and arduous tasks. But there is emphasis on the data of high school teachers' work time or school hours, less emphasis on the significance of work behavior during school time. That would make faculty development and teacher professional growth lost their footing. So this paper discards the traditional research method of teacher work time, adopts in-depth narrative inquiry on the scene and carefully explores the stories of teacher working hours.Firstly, this paper analyzes contemporary studies on workload of high school teachers at home and abroad, and based on a survey conducted in China, offers a statistical description of high school teachers'working time. The average teachers working hours in high school in China was 9.89 hours per day. It is apparently a very long working hours. The average working hours in Shanghai was 9.3 hours per day. The average hours for teacher teaching, lesson planning and correcting homework were 7.4 hours per day.Secondly, narrative inquiry has implemented. The main source of information in the paper has collected by participatory observation and in-depth interview. Besides teacher resumes, lesson plans, essays, teaching reflection, etc. are collected. At the same time, researcher records field notes and research log as an addition.Thirdly, narrative inquiry was implemented to describe the daily work of four teachers. The four teachers have different subjects, different stages of life, different family status and different educational experience. The paper tried to make readers understand their personal differences in distribution of working time. And let them catch some perceptual knowledge of senior high school teachers' working life.Four teachers are elaborated on four themes, namely: "double pay", "fade out of life", "experienced teacher", "leisure and lose." What the four chapters focus on are: novice teacher's growth; pregnant lady teacher's balance of work life and family life; the work situation of middle-aged teacher's or expert teacher, and retired teacher chapter discusses the marginalization of teachers from the perspective of humanistic concern description.Finally, the paper discusses two themes of high school teachers' life in detail respectively. They are "working statuses" and "teacher experience". Also the paper puts forward three proposals for the future research and presents study reflects. |
