As the most basic and important vehicle of teaching content, primary and secondary school textbooks were paid special attention to by successive state and government in the development of history. They were treated as an important means to guide students to socialization and self-rule. It was very often that, when there was a momentous social change, people desired the overthrow of the old textbooks and the construction of the new textbooks. Thus, in 1949, when People's Republic of China was just founded, and China extricated herself from foreign imperialism and domestic reactionary forces of aggression and oppression, and embarked on the socialist road, the new government was bound to ask for the quick reaction of textbooks, so as to change people's thinking and achieve the integration of a new society. On the basis of enjoying a large number of primary and secondary school textbooks in the early days of China's establishment, the author tries to clarify textbook-related history of development between 1949 and 1953 by reading these materials. Through an accurate grasp of discipline features in the historical process, the author attempts to reflect on the unification experience of primary and secondary school textbooks, so as to provide reference to the orderly development of today's textbooks. This paper consists of four parts:Partâ… Introduction. The author briefly introduced the origins and significance of research on this topic, and put emphasis on defining the boundary of research object and time. In the following, the author comprehensively analyzed the basic ideas and methods of clarifying this research on the basis of existing relevant studies.Partâ…¡:The Practical Selection of Unification. From the external stimulus-the establishment of new China, to the internal contributing factor-the complexity of textbooks in that period, the author deeply explored the practical selection of unification of textbooks within a few years after China's establishment, which laid groundwork to the exploration of the specific process of unification in the next chapter.PartIII:The Realization of Unification. Through historical analysis, the author summarized five measures to the unification of textbooks in the early days of new China's establishment:a clear policy of national unified supply; announcement on textbook catalog; a particular set-up to implement state-unified compilation and publication; standardization of curriculum and system of primary and secondary education. The author described the paths to textbook unification since the founding of People's Education Press, including selected continuance and revision.Partâ…£:Haracteristics and Reflection of Unification. On the basis of previous sections, the author further reviewed and analyzed the two main characteristics of unification:the way to unification was of emergency nature and strong political intent. Then the author reflected on the successful experience in the process:Firstly, the government should pay great attention and make a clear policy of textbooks; secondly, the government should make great efforts to develop a concrete and feasible textbook management system; thirdly, the government should build a net of ensuring the quarlity of textbook by broadening the channel, so as to guide the construction and development of today's primary and secondary school textbooks.
