The contemporary instructional design specialist being well-known in world, M. David Merrill believes that we have seen a proliferation of instructional design theories and models in recent years, but they have fundamental underlying principles in common. So he has reviewed instructional design theories in an attempt to identify prescriptive principles and derived the First Principle of Instruction in 2002:1) Learning is promoted when learners are engaged in solving real-world problems; 2) Learning is promoted when existing knowledge is activated as a foundation for new knowledge; 3) Learning is promoted when new knowledge is demonstrated to the learner; 4) Learning is promoted when new knowledge is applied by the learner; 5) Learning is promoted when new knowledge is integrated into the learner's world. This principle emphasizes how to promote the learning well, that is, no matter what kinds of teaching products must meet 3E (Effective, Efficient and Engaging learning) performance. The First Principles of Instruction are design-oriented or prescriptive rather than learning-oriented or descriptive. They are related to create learning environments and products rather than describe how learners acquire knowledge and skill from these environments or products. The theory can direct the practice well. In this research, I attempt to test the validity of the First Principle of Instruction according to the application of the theory in classroom teaching and expect to find the way of effective teaching in classroom. This thesis is composed of 5 parts:Chapter 1:The study of the context of the First Principle of Instruction, including the development motivation of the America instructional design and the evolution of Merrill's instructional design thought.Chapter 2:The theoretical analysis of the First Principle of Instruction, including the main ideas, the unique teaching value and the practicality and relevance it contains.Chapter 3,4:The application of the First Principle of Instruction in classroom teaching, including instructional design and implementation and case analysis. Chapter 5:The conclusions and prospects on the theme.
