The objective and scientific professional standards for teachers can play a guiding role in the direction of teachers' work, besides, as the important documents to establish and guarantee the professional status of teachers, they are the yardstick to measure the quality of teaching and becoming an important symbol of teaching, in addition, they are the core content of building up the teachers' educational system. Professional standards for teachers make it clearer to each teacher about such goals as what and how they should do in their career. The establishment of professional standards for teachers will also provide powerful mechanism for defining and spreading the more effective instruction. Meanwhile, they also offer valuable reference for teachers'study and development, and provide us with important ways to evaluate teachers' qualification objectively as well. Generally speaking, the objective and scientific professional standards for teachers offer the methods for teachers'selection, the direction for teachers' training, the scales for teachers' being evaluated, the guides for teachers'self-development, and the guarantee for improving teachers' qualification, hence, great significance in improving the teaching quality. It is fairly well known that the U.S has achieved amazing experience in making professional standards for teachers, which is quite worth learning for us.The thesis consists of three parts as follows:The introduction part introduces the study object and gives the reason of the study, then sums up, on the basis of some documents, the general idea about the study of professional standards for teachers in domestic and U.S, then introduces the study content and methods, finally gives the definition of some terms.The second part with chapter two, chapter three, and chapter four mainly introduces the background in which professional standards for teachers were established and its progress in history, and then outlines the theoretical basis for the U.S. professional standards for teachers and their contents, chapter four analyses the features of the professional standards for teachers in the U.S, and at the same time, points out their defects.The last part tries to put forward some suggestions for designing professional standards for teachers in China on the basis of the analysis on the features of the professional standards for teachers in U.S.
