Study On The Social Participation Of The Elderly Empty-nesters In The City

Social participation is an important element that affects the life quality of the elderly empty-nesters, how to improve the participation level of the elderly empty-nesters will be a task for the whole society. From the theories and empirical aspects, writer studied multi-dimensionally the conception, the main areas, significance of the elderly empty-nesters'social participation and the present situation, problems and causes and effects of the factors of the elderly empty-nesters'social participation.In addition,writer pointed the principles and measures of how to improve the participation level of the elderly empty-nesters. The social participation of the elderly empty-nesters includes four aspects:economic activities, political activities, cultural and sports activities and interpersonal communication. Study shows that social participation plays an important role not only for the empty-nesters but also for the whole society. Positive and health social participation will be helpful to improve the physical and mental health and the living quality of the elderly empty-nesters. Most importantly, that will be good for building harmonious society.There are many problems in the area of the elderly empty-nesters'participation, for example, the low overall level of participation, the poor quality of participation and serious shortage of communication support. The internal factors contain age and physical condition, income level, education level, family status and the subjective understanding of their social participation. The external ones include the children of attitude, peer groups, and community service facilities, the managing of the community services.Research shows social support will enhance the level of social participation of elderly people. Strengthening community building and improving the empty-nesters'hardware and software environment should be the social consensus and government's responsibility. Therefore, first, we should develop social pension to increase the participation level of empty-nesters; Second, we should develop the old social work to improve empty-nesters' awareness and capacity of social participation; Third, we also should strengthen community building to improve the social support system; Fourth, we must strengthen advocacy for the elderly empty-nesters in the society for building good public opinion environment.
