As the new course reform deepens, the ordinary classroom becomes the main battlefield to really push the New English Curriculum in senior high schools. This thesis makes a study about the optimization of English teaching on the basis of the characteristics of students in senior high schools and the new concepts guided by the New Curriculum.Babanski's optimum theory gives two criteria of class teaching: one is the teaching efficiency and the other is the time consumption, which goes with "fast-pacing, large-capacity, high-density" teaching methods advocated in the New Curriculum. A further research on this theory shows the teaching process is not in accordance with"student-centered'classroom. Constructive learning theory attaches great importance to ontological status of students, emphasizing the students take the initiative to construct knowledge. Based on the two theories, this thesis studies the principles, process of optimizing English teaching and the characteristics of three student-centered learning styles under the New Curriculum. It is hoped that integrating the three student-centered learning styles will achieve high efficiency. An experiment was carried out in Dezhou No 1 Senior High School. Inquiry learning was applied in text teaching taking topic as a mainline. Cooperative learning was mainly applied in the course of exercises comment and appraisement. And to accord with the characteristics of students in Grade 3, meaningful receptive learning style was promoted in learning the basic knowledge. After a year, depth interview, survey, class observation and comparison of the scores between pre-test and post-test show the conclusion: under the New English Curriculum, optimizing integration of learning styles does improve the teaching efficiency and optimize the English teaching.
