| In the past half century, there has been a strong commitment to including culture in the language curriculum. Scholars and practitioners in foreign language teaching began to reflect on these issues and have reached a consensus that inclusion of culture teaching in language curriculum should be a must.This paper is divided into five parts.The introduction mainly explains the reasons and aims of my writing this paper.Chapter 1 gives a brief account of the definition of culture and people's different opinions on the relationship between language and culture. These opinions generally be categorized as: linguistic determinism, cultural determinism and interdependence and theory of interactive relation between language and culture.Chapter 2 touches briefly upon the development of the foreign culture teaching both at home and abroad.Chapter 3 makes a further explanation of the close relationship between culture and foreign language teaching in terms of students interest and improvement of students reading comprehension.In Chapter 4, in order to make clear the actual effect, the author conducted a test in two senior high schools separately in Wuxi, Jiangsu and Haikou, Hainan. (See Appendix) the result tells us that it is necessary to incorporate cultural knowledge into middle school English teaching. Cultural teaching can not only arouse middle school students' interest in learning English, but also increase their cultural awareness and inter-cultural communicative ability.Chapter 5 introduces the contents about English culture to inform the students of, proposes some approaches in cultural teaching to make middle school students understand English culture and develop their inter-cultural and the ability of inter-cultural communication, and puts forward the principles of teaching to be obeyed in middle schools.The conclusion makes a summary of the whole thesis and calls on teachers to introduce English cultural knowledge at the right time. |
