In the knowledge-based economy era, human resource has become the most important strategic resource of the organizations. Since the universities are considered as training bases for senior talent, the management of the discipline leaders, academic team supervisors, and excellent teachers is particularly important. Some faculties engage in the production, creation, expansion and application of the knowledge, do scientific research as the major labor, have some managing skills, to make outstanding contributions or achievements in the science and technology development and grand engineering projects, who we considered as senior academics. They are the highest quality human resource, as well as the key component of the core competency of universities. The academics are at the forefront of knowledge production, and closely touch the dissemination, utilization and circulation of the knowledge, whose ability and quality directly reflect the efficiency of universities management and reaching levels. Therefore, the capacities-building of them have become a significant task of universities human resource management. Most of the current competency studies are on the competency of enterprise managers and governmental administrant, while the empirical researches of the competency in higher education field, especially for the senior academics, are relatively limited. This study aims to explore and build a competency model, which tries to fully describe the characters of senior academics to improve the recruitment, selection, training, personnel evaluation and increase the core competence of universities. We have built theoretical assumptions of competency for the senior academics by document analysis, internet information analysis, expert interview and other qualitative methods. On the basis of above work, we design a competency scale, and test the validity and reliability of the hypothesis through the empirical research to construct a competency model. The results revealed that the competency of senior academics is composed of 10 elements, as self-confidence, learning ability, cooperation, information mining capabilities, innovation, training, team-management skills, supervisory capacity, anti-stress and achievement-oriented by the empirical analysis. According to the second-order factor analysis and structural equation, we obtained three dimensionalities of competency, such as quality of scientific research, research capacity and management capability. The ten elements and three dimensionalities were framed to the competency model of the senior academics, which may provide some consultations for universities to recruitment, selection, training, personnel evaluation and faculty quality improvement.
