The new round of high school curriculum reform, which highlights the selective courses, is underway. High school should firstly ensure that all students could achieve the basic academic requirements of high school level, and then, should provide as much opportunities and space for students'personality development as possible. This idea is also the inherent demand of quality-oriented education, which means that the basic education we offered to students should teach them how to choose what they want by themselves and guide them to make an autonomous self-development, so that to improve their comprehensive development and then to achieve the ultimate goal of improving quality of the whole nation. The discussion on division of arts and sciences has existed in our long education history for over 100 years. The result of such discussion changed over time and time, because of the changing background of social and cultural. Some related literature review are also be mentioned.Part two is about the history of division of arts and sciences in high school education. A set of basic thoughts and theories, which support the division of arts and sciences are presented. Besides, it also conforms with the requirement of talent selection from higher education and of specialization from social division of labour.Part four is about some critiques and reflection on division arts and sciences. This chapter pointed out that it restraints students'comprehensive development and cannot offer student reasonable knowledge structure to divide arts and sciences. Especially, under the climate of quality-oriented education and new round of high school curriculum reform, the single mode of division of arts and sciences limits the overall function of curriculum and cannot offer students various selective choices, so that it cannot satisfy the requirements of students and society. The final part is about the direction of division of arts and sciences. After discussion on the advantage and disadvantages of division of arts and sciences, the author suggested that the division of arts and sciences should observe some principles, which the curriculum development should always focus on students' comprehensive, autonomous and personal development and should offer students as many choices as possible. Besides, the author also pointed out some trategies to improve the structure of high school curriculum so as to make it more selective to meet the various needs of students and society.
