Human resource in the institutions of higher education is the driving force and the most important resource to the development of colleges and universities .With the rapid enlargement of higher education scale, the number of college and university students increases rapidly. Therefore, the human resource structure analyze in the institutions of higher education, how to improve the human resource exploration and management, and how to optimize the human resource structure, these questions have become the important issues for human resource management department of the institutions of higher education to resolve urgently.This thesis has selected the teaching-research person and administrators who work in eight institutions of higher education which are running under government control in S city as the targets. The eight institutions are classified into four kinds, each kind include two institutions: one kind is research university—two key universities charged by ministry of education (one of the "985"project university and one of the "211" project university); the second kind is teaching-research university—two key universities which own the rights to award master degree and doctor degree in S city; the third kind is the teaching-oriented university—two institutions of undergraduate course which were upgraded in the 1990s; the forth kind include two vocational and technical colleges in S city. The author chose four variables: age, gender, academic degree and professional title to analyze the human resource structure in the eight institutions of higher education.The analyze results shows that: The human resource age structure in the institutions of higher education is: the average age of teaching-research people is 41.5 years old, the average age of administrator is 44.69 years old. Our country's human resource structure in the institutions of higher education has the trend of rejuveration. The gender structure is: Female is more than male among the teaching-research people, and the rate is very close: male account for 54.22%, female account for 45.78%. Among administrators, male is a little more than female, male account for 56.66%, female account for 43.34%. The academic degree structure is: among teaching-research people, master degree account for 50.64%, bacholer degree account for 33.24%, the remainders are associate diploma or below. Administrators' academic degrees are relatively low, bacholer degree account for 39.7%, master degree account for 21.17%, associate diploma account for 20%, below associate diploma account for 16.14%. The professional title structure is: among teaching-research people, senior professional title account for 11.54%, vice-senior professinal title account for 27.85%, the remainders are middle-lever or entry level. The professional titles of teaching-research people are relatively low. Among administrators, senior professional title account for 6.85%, vice-senior professinal title account for 15.49%, the remainders are middle-lever or entry level. Compared with American human resource age structure in the institutions of higher education, our teaching- research people and administrators in colleges and universities are younger; as to age structure, female account for a higher rate; academic degrees are lower; as to professional title structure, the senior professional title account for a lower rate.In connection with the human resource structure characteristics of age, gender, academic degree and professional title, this thesis proposed some policy suggestions to human resource development and management: establishing a sound system of human resource exploration and management in the institutions of higher education; perfect the human resource age structure, impel the human resource gender equlity; upgrade the academic degree level, optimize the human resource professional title structure.This thesis centers on analyze of the "hard structure" in the institutions of higher education, and only show the basic characteristics of human resource structure in the institutions of higher education. How to analyze the "soft structure" as knowledge, ability and inner quality structure of human resource in the institutions of higher education are the further research areas for future research.
