With the development of the cultural exchange of the globe . English writing as an important communicative means, is widely used in a variety of fields. Therefore, the new English curriculum for middle schools demands highly on English writing ability of middle school students. However, teaching English writing is the most difficult part. Although they have learnt English for several years, they still can not avoid some weak points, mainly existing in three parts: (1) The writing is dull and even illogical due to the limited vocabulary and inappropriate expression. (2) Insensible coherence and loose structure drive the writing even worse. In addition, the writing is usually lacking in content or just write at random without a main idea. (3) The writing is simply regard as a sort of literal translation from Chinese to English rather than a complete essay.The paper makes an analysis of the common problems in the teaching of English writing at senior high school and works out the causes that hide behind them. In my opinion, the reason why students lack in initiative and passion in writing , actually lies in the teaching methodology. English teachers focus less on the importance of the techniques in teaching how to write, which results in the inappropriate teaching strategies.In view of these vital issues, the paper presents some corresponding teaching strategies, involving the strategy of strengthening basic knowledge, the strategy of comprehensive development, the strategy of instructive skills and the strategy of different cultural background, all of which are based on my teaching experience and the theory on English writing.
