Education is a talent-nurturing social activities, while the ideological and political education and student affairs administration which university tutors are engaged in is also a social activity, in which tutors play a variety of roles: lifelong mentors and intimate friends; teachers and employees. As tutors, they are faced with many different role expectations from different groups .This study is based on the role theory in sociology, which is examined from two points of view: the role expectation of tutors from students, and the practical roles which tutors are playing. What this study concerns most is the way to build up the rank of tutors which will fulfill the needs of university students and demonstrates the educational provision system of private university as well.The study is conducted from both theoretical analysis and empirical survey, taking Guangdong Baiyun University for example, and the study also designs a questionnaire to examine the role understanding, the role assessment and role expectation of the tutors from the students according to the Provisions of Development of the Rank of Tutor in Regular Institutions of Higher Learning. On the basis of descriptive statistics, the study adopted the method of One-Way ANOVA with SPSS to examine the role expectation of the tutors from students of different majors to get different role expectations from different groups of students.Through daily observation and interview, the study examines the role which the tutors are playing, moreover, it made a contrast of the roles which the students are expecting to find the difference and analyze the possible reasons, only in this way may a possible way of development of the rank of tutors in private institute be found.There are four chapters in this thesis: The first chapter mainly deals with research background, theoretical basis, and literature review and research design. The second and the third chapter mainly discuss the general information of the role expectation of the tutors from the students, the diffenences in expectation from different groups of students, and the overall information and the practical roles of tutors in Guangdong Baiyun University. The fourth chapter mainly talks about the role expectation in contrast with the practical roles of the tutors, and analyzes the reasons, and provides some suggestions for the development of the rank of tutors in private institutes.
