Culture is the root of language and language is based on culture. Cultural awareness is set clearly as one of the teaching goals at senior middle school for the first time in the New English Curriculum Standard in 2003, which not only clearly points out the three aspects of culture awareness , i.e. cultural knowledge, cultural comprehension, cross-cultural communicative awareness and competence , but also makes out the specific content standards. This clearly shows that cultural teaching has begun to make it way from being only a concept into middle English classes.Classes are an important place for a student to learn a language and culture teaching should be more merged into class teaching .There are many ways to conduct culture teaching. Among other things, merging culture background into English class teaching is one of the most effective ways of foreign culture teaching. Using foreign background knowledge to conduct culture teaching can help students to understand how the English language came into being and developed. In the meantime ,it can also stimulate students' interest in English and foster their awareness of innovation and creativity. Again, merging culture background into class teaching will be of great significance to exerting a favorable influence on the taste and quality of students.This paper is trying to theoretically probe into the relationship between culture and language, since culture and language shouldn't be separated from each other. Then based on the questionnaires made by the author and the summary of books, it analyses the results to find out the culture teaching should be applied urgently in the class and can be carried out effectively, and it elaborates on the significance of culture teaching in senior high middle school English class teaching. In addition, combining cultural background knowledge ,cultural content and the characteristics and requirements of the new English Curriculum Standard which appeals for culture teaching in high school English class, it points out that the relationship between culture language and language teaching is complementary to each other. Finally, it presents some cases of English teaching with cultural teaching being emphasized.
