| In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in writing within the English teaching circles and there has been growing discussion about the existing problems and ways of making improvements. Compared with the status that writing had in English teaching, the teaching of writing and the development of writing abilities have become important trends in current education. In spite of many empirical articles on how to improve middle-school students' writing, as a English teacher with ten years' working experiences, I feel deeply that the importance of English writing has not received the attention it merits, the teaching of writing still remains a neglected area in many middle schools. But my feelings about the teaching of English writing are not universality and positivism, therefore, I want to make an investigation. The purpose of this thesis is to know the present situation of English writing teaching at senior middle school, to improve its present situations, at the same time, the writer hope to arouse the attention of middle school teachers and students to the teaching of English writing.This paper tries to investigate into the present situations of writing in English by distributing questionnaires to subjects who are learning English at four different senior middle schools of Huhhot. along with interviews conducted among a group of English teachers and students of the same school. The result of investigation presents that the English writing teaching exist the following problems:The students' problems are (1) More than one third of subjects are unwilling to write and their negative attitude interfere with learning to write; (2) Most students are blocked in aspects of generation of ideas, word processing and organization of written discourse.(3)Students are lacking in sustained practice of writing, their level of writing is lower universally.The teachers" problems are (1) Teachers lack of experiences in teaching writing course (2) Monotonous writing tasks assigned to students have frustrated them of their interests and motivation to writing. (3) Inappropriate feedback discourages students of their confidence in writing. (4)Inefficient class hours prevent the teachers to well fulfill the teaching program.Therefore, we assume to suggest that more effective techniques such as arousing student' attitude and motivation, improving teaching methods and error correction, and teachers' training.This paper consists of five chapters.Chapter One is an introduction, in which we discuss the background of this investigation and its research object.Chapter Two is the literature review. The author presents a review of the theories and studies on writing both abroad and in China. Finally, the importance of writing's role in English language learning is discussed. Writing Requirements in Teaching Syllabuses at Senior Middle School &New English Curriculum Standards will be explained at the end of the chapter.Chapter Three studies the original data of the questionnaire for teachers and students, analysis result of interview for teachers and students, The writer find some problems in writing teaching,Chapter Four discusses the Suggestions of the investigation results to English writing teaching.Chapter Five is the conclusion. It clearly draws that it is necessary and feasible to adopt eclectic approach to enhance students' writing ability. |
