As an important way of school-based teacher training, mentoring has been used widely in elementary schools and high schools. However, there are still lots of problems about it in the school practice. The discussion on those problems and improvement of mentoring is mostly experiential and fragmentary. Problems and the background of teacher professional development make our must study mentoring again.Taking a math elementary school teacher and his mentoring as a case, this paper aims to investigate how the mentoring help the new teacher on their professional development by narrative inquiry.Chapter one tired the development of mentoring's history, and made a theoretical interpretation on mentoring based on bibliography. Chapter two introduced the situation about mentoring of H elementary school, and show MR D's mentoring.Chapter three, four, five narrated the relationship between mentoring and new teacher MR D's professional development. According to his unforgettable events, the paper attempt to prove up how the mentoring give support to the new teacher's upgrowth in their professional life.The last chapter is the part of conclusion and advice. Based on the situation of MR D's mentoring, the paper finds out the key factors which affects his professional development in mentoring including professional quality of the new teacher and mentor, various instrutional methods and content, good relationship between the teachers and the nice school culture. According to the investigation of the case, some suggestions are given to improve the new teacher's professional development under the mentoring:(1) Instituting a better system;(2) building a equality and mutual benefit aim;(3) extending the instrutional methods and content;(4) completing the mechanism of valuation and conservator about the mentoring.
