The education of civic consciousness is a subject which closely related to the modernization of our country. As a comprehensive academic discipline, geography plays an important role in cultivating civic consciousness.With the fast development of globalization, people stepped into the threshold of 21st century, however, the globalization also proposes a stern challenge to geography education, and requires it cultivating students' qualities. With the deepening of reform in geography education, a common belief was formed, that is"geography instruction should adapt to the development of era and look to the whole world. At the beginning of 21st century, the teaching program of geography provided a series of tasks towards civic consciousness cultivating, and aimed to make students know more knowledge about population, resources and environment, etc, to cultivate their awareness of sustainable development. Therefore, the main task of geography teacher is cultivating students' civic consciousness. This paper is a study on how to enhance the civic consciousness education in geography cause under the new circumstances.In the view of geography, this paper expounds the concepts of civic consciousness, and points out the specifics of civic consciousness cultivating in middle school geography teaching. As for the civic consciousness, it is not only a necessity for socialist modernization drive, but also a request for students' lifelong development.In order to cultivate students' civic consciousness better, the author analyzes the current situation of civic consciousness through questionnaire survey, and get the cause of problems. Therefore, effective and target-oriented measures could be proposed to strengthen students' civic consciousness.In a word, pay attention to civic consciousness, strengthen its education is a necessity for both nation and students. This paper could be a reference to the curriculum reform of geography and teaching practices in middle school.
