The Chinese language teaching circles have been making their way with difficulty since Mr. Lu Suxiang criticized the Chinese language teaching for the lack of quantity, quality, efficiency and effectiveness in 1978. All walks of life put forward further criticism on the Chinese language teaching starting with Beijing Literature on Nov. 1997.What on earth leads to the plight of the Chinese language teaching?The answer lies in the old saying that read thousands of books, and travel thousands of miles. However, nowadays most of the students read little except the teaching materials.In 2003 the ministry of education stated clearly in reading and appreciation part of National Chinese Language Curriculum Standards that the senior middle school students should have an extensive interest in reading so as to broaden their horizon. They should learn to choose the suitable reading materials for themselves, read healthy books and read the whole book to enrich their spiritual world and increase their literature taste. The after-class reading volume should reach at least 1,500,000 words including five classical literature works.On the contrary, there is a huge gap between the current students' reading volume and the regulated one. Besides, the after-class reading activity is almost in a disorderly and ineffective condition with many misunderstandings.It's impossible to change the situation alone by in-class teaching. Actually only by after-class reading and a maximal increase in the reading volume can the reading be broken through in quantity. In addition, the teachers' instruction and monitoring on after-class reading are also badly needed.This dissertation intends to get a comprehensive understanding of the reading situation inYueqing by the analysis of the importance of after-class reading and the survey of the students' after-class reading in this area and then tries to provide an operational program for increasing the Chinese language teaching.This dissertation, based on the previous experience, attempts to cover all the data and classify the data so as to establish a scientific and complete system of after-class reading, including the interest cultivation, the choice of after-class reading material, the instruction of after-class reading and so on.The author, possessing rich teaching experience, emphasizes the combination between theory and practice while writing this dissertation, tries to increase the students' reading starting with changing the concepts and arousing the interest and strives to put the study to the theoretical level.
