Reading is a valuable basic skill. Reading is the main activity to school students, which is crucial to captivate study skills. New course reform embraces that teaching should aim at students' life-long study. Since reading is a main part of life - long study capability, reading ability is next to none of all the courses. Therefore, it is very necessary to strengthen teaching on reading skills in schools.This essay, based on the course criterion of biology in Shanghai, tries to talk about the actuality of reading on biology nowadays. It also works on how to cultivate students' reading ability after interviewing with teachers of Chinese and Science.According to some researches, though students are able to be aware of the importance of biology, they still find it is not quite easy to do reading for short of interests, good habits and skills on reading. In these teachers' opinion, it is possible to improve students' reading skills, if the work starts from raising interests and then goes on having good study habits with proper instructs while reading. The text book of biology provides excellent reading materials among different sections and units.Research work is done among 6 classes in one school. After half years' comparison, it is obvious that reading skills on Science is important to the improvement of teaching efficiency, quality ,ability etc.However, difficulties are also found when research goes on, which may be solved by more practice and teaching .
