Vocabulary is one of the three major components that constitute English language knowledge (the other two are phonetics and grammar), and is the foundation of all English language skills. No matter how good one's grammar is and how beautiful one's pronunciation is, if he has no adequate vocabulary to express his own feelings or to understand others'opinions, he still cannot communicate with others in this language. However, vocabulary learning is the most difficult task in students'study. It is, therefore, especially important to study vocabulary learning strategies and its teaching methods. Vocabulary learning strategies consist of metacognitive, cognitive, and socio-affective strategies. By conducting a research into vocabulary learning strategies, the writer found students of different sexes and vocabulary sizes apply vocabulary learning strategies differently and that vocabulary sizes have a positive effect on students'scores. Based on the research and many years of teaching experience, many vocabulary teaching suggestions are proposed.The thesis consists of 5 chapters. Chapter One provides a review of the theoretical background of learning strategies and vocabulary learning strategies both home and abroad. Chapter Two introduces the methods and designs of the research in terms of the subjects, instruments and the implement procedures. Based on the above review and the survey, Chapter Three introduces the results of the research. Chapter Four analyse the results and the causes. Chapter Five introduces to teachers some helpful suggestions on Senior High School English vocabulary teaching.
