The unbalance between the reform of basic education, development of social economy and college expansion and employment has brought about the new project about how undergraduate physical education cultivates its track and field major students with all-round qualities. In addition to syllabus of track and field major of Physical education from Beijing Sport University, Wuhan Institute Of Sport, Guangxi Normal University, Guangzhou Physical Education Institute and Hunan Normal University, this thesis takes track and field branch students of physical education of 12 P.E. universities and colleges and departments of comprehensive universities from Beijing, Guangdong province and central and western China, and the national teaching plans of undergraduate P.E. in 1991, 1997 and 2004 as research object. Based on the methods of documentary, questionnaire, mathematical statistics, expert interview, logic and systematic analysis, it undertakes research and analysis on the present situation of comprehensive qualities of track and field major students of undergraduate P.E., figures out the causes of the problems and solutions and guides students to the motive of study, so as to guide them being more professional teachers than comprehensive talented persons of P.E. and quite competitive in society. Moreover, this paper finds the existing issues of comprehensive qualities cultivating of track and field major students of undergraduate P.E in China's universities and points out the problems needed to be paid attention and improved in teaching of track and field of P.E., aimed at improving teaching quality and quickening transformation of teachers'teaching ideas and the reform of course system in track and field, teaching contents and ways. The research shows that the comprehensive qualities of track and field students of undergraduate P.E and teaching ideas and methods of P.E. universities are still required to improve for meeting the demand of society. The main conclusions are as follows:1. Today's society needs talented persons with comprehensive abilities, especially, those who can be qualified for guiding social P.E. work. Comprehensive qualities of track and field talented persons are the fundamental competitiveness in the future.2. Comprehensive qualities of track and field talented persons are composed of five elements as follows: the first is thought and idea, such as the degree of devotion to teaching cause and the cultivation of being example and lifelong education view, creative education view and quality education view; the second is basic theoretical knowledge including English competence, competence of computer operation, and pedagogy and psychology knowledge; the third is the specialized elementary knowledge of P.E. such as the knowledge of school physical education, motion Anthropometric Science, health care and rehabilitation and human morphology; the forth is the knowledge and techniques of track and field including competences of body-building guiding, track and field sports training, the specialized knowledge of track and field, teaching and organizing ability of track and field, the ability self-taught specialized knowledge and track and field sports techniques; the fifth is social adaptability including the abilities to acquire new knowledge, to adapt to a unfamiliar surroundings and interpersonal relationship.3. There is certain gap between the comprehensive quality of track and field students of undergraduate P.E. and social demand. Except track and field sports technique, judging ability and social adaptability, the other competences are inferior.4. Through the analysis on teaching objective and teaching program of track and field, it is found that all P.E. universities are not clear about the training goal of talented persons in track and field and still place too much attention to P.E. teachers'training, therefore, ignoring the training goal of social P.E. supervisors, which leads to old-fashioned teaching contents of track and field, repeating of study contents and low efficiency and that the teaching contents of track and field such as orienting cross-country training and outdoor sports etc. are not well undertaken in track and field major. Thence, the track and field students can not meet social demand due to the narrow knowledge.5. In addition to too simple teaching and evaluation means, the cramming teaching mode and"major-oriented"education, teachers ignore the combination of speculative knowledge and the discipline in teaching, and pay insufficient attention to training students'competences of teaching, innovation and knowledge integration, which is harmful to the cultivation of comprehensive qualities of track and field students.
