The Image Of The Student In Legal Culture

The text is always the focus of research in the field of sociology of education, especially the sociology of curriculum. Depending on the re-understanding of the function and meaning of language, which not only gives the independent meaning to the text but also find the relationship between micro world of text and macro world of society. The sociology of curriculum hopes to find the essential strategies for translating social rules and regulates through analyzing the textbook.However, in the past, the researches pay most of their attention to the content. The form of language is always neglected. In another word, the sociology of curriculum hasn't take the linguist theory as their own instrument. In order to overcome the deficiency, this research will take the linguist theory of M.A.K Halliday as the theory framework to do the investigation to the textbook of education. Halliday asserted that language is a social meaning system, which is deeply influenced by the social relationship behind it.The question of this research is: what's kind of social relationship does the form of language behind the textbook represent? In the legal culture, what's the student image? This research utilizes the theory framework of Halliday to analyze this problem in three different levels: text, grammar and lexicon.Finally, this research finds out that the textbook of 1986 figure out a negative listener under the power of language and authority, who exists as abstract"other"who cannot be seen clearly. The textbook of 2003 figures out a positive constructor who exists as concrete person in daily life. Although this kind of student has more right and possibility to do the morality choice, they are still controlled by the culture and value system.Moreover, on the basement of analyzing the students'image, this research also reveal the smart and obstinate strategies behind the language which seems to be cross-bencher.
