Social stability is a major theoretical and practical problem commonly concerned by all sectors of society. In recent years, with the world situation changing variability, the highlight of domestic social contradictions, social stability has stirred up people's enthusiasm for research again. This paper chooses higher education as a starting point, from the point of university as the representative of higher education to reflect to social stability, using the education scientific theory to interpret social stability, which has important significance of the promotion of higher education and social development.This paper starts from the sociological point of view, combining social stability theoretical results at home and abroad, and then analyses the concepts and features of social stability and social conflicts. On the basis of comparing higher education development and social development in the domestic and international, and also checking the law between higher education and social development, this paper proves that safeguarding and promoting social stability is one of the most important missions of higher education. From the viewpoint of the Structural Functionalism, this paper extends that higher education gives full play to the role in promoting and safeguarding social stability, through the promotion of social changing, social mobility, and social equality. Meanwhile harmonious development of higher education is also the inevitable requirement of social stability. Aiming at a number of issues in the development of higher education, according to the "1234" principle, this paper starts from the aspects of system, environment, policies, ideas and others, combing of the current research results, and builds the harmonious higher education of its own.
