This paper focuses on school timetable. In spite of its smallness the timetable shapes the rhythm of teachers and students' school lives. Besides, the change of timetable reflects and realizes the idea of educational reform. This study tries to outline the nature and change of school timetable using historical, logical, and comparative analysis. Putting school timetable under different traditions of curriculum system, curriculum development, and teaching organization, and based on cases of timetable used in history and current schools, this paper analyzes the alternatives, limitations and possibilities of the change of school timetables. It has been more than one hundred years since the introduction of modern education system into China. However, while the context of education and school system have changed a lot during the past century, the form and function of timetable have mainly not changed in schools. Even today, during the new curriculum reform which aims to rebuild the school lives of teachers and students, it is still the traditional timetable which is prevailing in schools.By introducing and discussing some emerging new forms of school timetable in countries such as Japan and France, which shares the same curriculum system tradition with China, the paper suggests the possibilities of change of timetable in Chinese schools under current social and educational context.
